Giselle Cancela

Giselle Cancela is a Corporate Business Tax Auditor for the New Jersey Department of Treasury. As a dedicated and detailed accounting professional, Giselle has been conducting corporate business tax audits for Fortune 500 companies for over eight years. She specializes in large volume sales & use, income, and LITTER tax audits. She independently analyzes client tax information, examining and determining the correct tax liability, penalty and interest due, and writing up a narrative with schedules and summary of work done during the audit.

Prior to her role at the New Jersey Department of Treasury, Giselle served as a Senior SALT consultant at Grant Thornton LLP. There she ran client engagements from start to finish, which included planning, executing, directing, and completing tax projects and managing client budgets. She supervised, trained, and mentored associates and interns on tax projects and assessed performance of staff for engagement reviews. She would conduct multidisciplinary, multi-state reviews that analyze all state and local taxes to identify optimal filing options, exemptions, credits and incentives, and corporate structures that could reduce the client’s tax burden. Along with demonstrating an understanding of increasingly complex tax concepts and responding to inquiries from the IRS and other tax authorities.

When she is not working, Giselle spends time with her family traveling. She is always giving back to her community by donating or raising funds for those she finds in need of assistance.
